Here’s a little video introducing some of the movements from the Biospirals Ba Duan Jin sequence.
A Quick Ba Duan Jin History:
The original Ba Duan Jin or Eight Pieces of Brocade – a form of Qigong, was developed in the 12th century by Marshal Yueh Fei a great Chinese Military strategist. It was designed to strengthen the entire body/mind, balance vital systems (e.g. the lymphatic, endocrine and nervous system) and support the health of the internal organs and build up the immune system and vitality. It was also created to release stagnant energy and toxic residues from the whole body/mind system.
Science now understands how stress, un-resolved emotions, injury (including operations) and traumatic experiences are stored in the tissues, sinews and organs of the body (something our ancient ancestors across many cultures have understood for thousands of years).
Following my own (and continuing) research, I personally believe this sequence was also a way of releasing the physical and emotional stress, trauma and injury that military personnel would have been subjected to on a daily basis, thus supporting the health of the body/mind/spirit connection and perhaps even preventing PTSD, (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
I also believe we have much to learn from these ancient arts. True and correct practice of the internal arts like Nei Gong and Qigong (and other ancient modalities from other cultures) are still equally relevant to our health and well being in society today.
Regular practice can not only allow us to release the stresses and strains of life that we face on a daily basis, but to free ourselves from past physical and emotional trauma, injury and stress which are often held in the pelvis, viscera, connective tissues and major organs of the body which, can manifest as physical or psychological symptoms and illness later on.
