Good Vibrations! The Amazing Health Benefits of toning and sound healing

Biospirals Sonic Qigong – the 5 Healing Sounds

In the Biospirals Method of Qigong we learn 5 sounds (NAOUM) which are concentrated on the central axis within the 5 chambers.

Toning these sounds creates a simultaneous physical and energetic action that has profound affects on our physical and emotional well-being.

Regular practice gently opens up these energy centres along the central energetic axis to allow a flow that creates an inner harmony. This harmony is reflected within our physical body and mind and thus out into our physical daily lives.

Here we can find a meaningful way to interact on earth within the cosmos.

About Toning and Sound Healing-

I first learnt toning and chanting back in 1995 when I was on an 11-day silent retreat in Thailand (toning was about the only sound we were allowed to make). Since then I have learnt a number of mantras, tones and chants and this has become one of my favourite meditation practices over the years.

I often use a 108 mala bead string to count so that I can relax into myself. Personally, I have found this method takes me into an incredibly deep place within that I often can’t reach as easily through other techniques.

Not only does toning create an opening, healing vibration through the body it helps us to ‘find the feeling’, it’s that ‘feeling’ that allows us to align ourselves with the earthly and universal energies.

As we begin to connect with this feeling and develop an understanding of the power of the breath and toning, we can start to appreciate just how meaningful sound really is. From the sounds of nature in comparison to the sounds of traffic on the roads, busy shopping centres and offices, down to the choice of words that we use to express ourselves each day.

Each could be described as a vibration that comes to and goes from the body, so ‘raising your own vibration’ through practices such as toning helps to harmonise the body/mind reducing the effects of the stresses we may find ourselves in each day, but also becoming aware of our own thoughts and words which are a vibration that not only communicates with the world around us but, as we speak, that vibration is resounding through our own body as well.

There is a phenomenal amount of research going into the science of sound and sound therapy, this isn’t new and you only need to look up cymatics first introduced by Hans Jenny or the work of Masaru Emoto, Mandara Cromwell and John Stuart Reid (just to name a few) to discover the breadth of possibilities that sound healing could have on our health and lives.

Since learning the Biospirals Method of Qigong, I have been using the 108 mala beads to sound these 5 tones (NAOUM) into the chambers of my body 108 times. In comparison to other methods I have learnt, these tones create a wonderful resonance through the layers of the body/mind/spirit that allow me to ‘find that feeling’ and enter a deep state of awareness.

What are the Health Benefits?

Toning has been practised since ancient times as a form of healing and meditation. The most well-known is probably the sound Om or Aum, chanted since ancient times and believed in Eastern traditions to be the sound of the Universe and creation.

Science today is only just discovering the immense health benefits of toning and sound healing on the body, mind and spirit. The results so far are astonishing.

Sound and Gong Baths are popping up all over the country and are a wonderful way to relax and when you are relaxed your body can begin to give itself what it needs.

But did you know you can take this one step further and create a tone with your own voice which can offer you a deep experience that is scientifically proven to:

  • Increase oxygen to the brain,
  • Increase the levels of nitric oxide which destroys bacteria and viruses in the body and enhances the immune system,
  • Slow the heart rate and reduce blood pressure,
  • Calm brainwave activity and increase mental clarity,
  • Increase your vitality and improve digestion,
  • Reduce the level of stress hormones in the body.

By creating our own inner sound, we can relax and open up the body on a deeper level, studies show that practicing meditation techniques within a group setting has an even more beneficial effect.
